Edmund T. Becher Papers 1850-1980 1900-1950

The collection is made up primarily of newspaper clippings, student papers, classroom assignments, maps, and other research materials created and retained during Becher's teaching career. There are two folders of photographs (including some photographic negatives) of historical objects and buildings in the Spokane area, some of which no longer exist.

George Wright was an American soldier who served in the Mexican-American War and the American Civil War. He was born in Vermont in 1803 and died at sea on July 30, 1865. Wright attended West Point and graduated in 1822. He fought in the Mexican-American with the 8th infantry, and after being wounded was given the rank of colonel. In 1858 Wright oversaw the re-construction of Fort Dalles in Oregon Territory, and while in the Northwest also participated in the Yakima War and the Battle of Four Lak...

E. T. Becher, historian, taught at Rogers High School in Spokane from 1934 to 1967. In addition, he wrote many books and articles on the history of Spokane, including Spokane Corona: Eras and Empires. He was born in Iowa and graduated from the University of Idaho in 1927. He received his masters degree from the University of Washington in 1932 and began teaching at Rogers High School that year. He also served as social studies director for Spokane School District #81. He died in Spokane in 1994....
